“Little Angels”
Angel Fish Art
Pen and Ink on Illustration Board

1993
I am still digging around through my old portfolio. I found these little angels swimming in the ocean of boards and papers. They looked so crisp and clean until I scanned them and saw the close ups. You can see the irregularities in the amount of ink applied to different areas. There is also an ink “bleed” on the lines. I am sure I was quite pleased back then, but with the perfectionism of the computer age, this would not fly now. 😉

Father and Son Beach Walk by Jo Ann Tomaselli
JO ANN TOMASELLI ~ FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY
Hopefully this week-end you’ll be doing something fun like walking on the beach with a loved one ~ or loved ‘thing’ like your camera!
Sunrise on the beach is a wonderful time to take photographs.
The heat of the day is not yet evident, the blue of the sky is still a promise and as the rising sun breaks the horizon, the sand, the sea and the ocean are painted in hues of yellow gold and brown.
Shooting directly into the sun, the camera exposes for the sky and whatever is in the foreground, in this case a father and his son, are rendered in silhouette.
Enjoy your weekend ~ where-ever you are and what-ever your doing!
Happy Labor Day!
Jo Ann
Abstract Flower Swirl Art – Exploring Flowers and Photography Through Painting
Abstract Flower Swirl Art – Exploring Flowers, Pain and Photography Through Painting
A vibrant ink painting depicting swirling red and purple flowers atop stems of green, blue and teal.
While I currently see myself as primarily a photographer, I have begun to explore my artistic roots again. You can read more about the reasons behind this exploration here.
I must admit I’ve really overdone it lately, and my body is complaining loudly and quite persistently. At a time when each press of a key on my keyboard makes me wince, I wanted to post this bold and vivid explosion of color and movement. Not only is it a celebration of the possibility of alternate forms of creativity, it also features one of my favorite photographic subjects – the flower.
As an avid gardener, taking pictures of flowers is what initially led me into the amazing world of photography. Therefore, this alcohol ink painting is a reminder of two of my greatest…

N.E.V.E.R. Give Up!
Abstract Art by Sharon Cummings
I remember this piece very well. I almost threw it away. I spent many hours using Pantone markers and Prismacolor colored pencils getting the details of their fur just right. I wanted the eyes to have expression and depth. I was pleased with it’s progress until I tried to create a background. For some reason the grass and trees weren’t coming out the way I envisioned. They seemed too bright and did not look as good as the animals. I was crushed! Then I thought I could save it by making the background solid black. You can still see some of the black around the mane. But that didn’t work either. Finally in a last ditch effort to save all of my hard work, I got my x-acto knife and started the grueling task of cutting the giraffes out. I had to be so careful.
In the end, I decided to…

IT’S cONcept.U.AL ……. get it?
Conceptual photography by Jo Ann Tomaselli
Jo Ann Tomaselli ~ Visual & Verbal Reflections
Conceptual photography is an art form in and of itself. It’s aim is to instantly speak volumes to the minds of viewers. This type of photography doesn’t come naturally to me but what I’ve noticed is that when something moves me emotionally my conceptual work develops easily.

Golden California Hills
Is there beauty in severe drought?
The setting sun casts a warm glow over the golden California hills, its last rays illuminating the tops of distant oak trees. A little used gravel road winds its way in and out of the peaceful scene, and all seems right with the world on this tranquil evening in the mountains of the San Francisco Bay Area.
I’ve mentioned our severe drought in several recent blog posts, and here is an example of the current state of the land. I took this photo last week, as the sun began to set below the hills. We have a “Mediterranean climate” (mild winters, warm to hot dry summers) and are used to the grass drying up and many plants going dormant in the summertime. However, the vegetation is particularly parched this year, and many local reservoirs have turned to cracked depressions filled with grass and a bit of mud. While there…

Echinacea
A few years ago echinacea (or ‘cone flowers’ to us older crowd) were praised as a cure all for the common cold. More recent studies have undermined or dismissed that claim entirely, but in any case, they are still stunningly beautiful flowers and honeybees love them. And who would argue with bees?
The last picture was an opportunistic grab, a close up of the side of the vase I was using to hold the flower as I photographed it.
Before viewing the photographs, I would also like to invite you to visit the poetry blog, the Book of Pain. As always, special thanks to my dearest Lyn, She Of Great Taste In All Things But Men, who does most of the photo selection. Thank you for dropping by the Book of Bokeh.
